Feeding Guidelines

Treats & Chews

In general, treats and chews should make up no more than 5-10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake.  Keep organ meats toward the lower end because of their high nutrient density.  While they’re super healthy and tasty, too much can cause stomach upset and longer-term imbalances.

Raw Meaty Bones

RMB’s (raw meaty bones) are meant for intermittent and supplemental feeding.  Adding items like duck necks, chicken feet and turkey necks a few times a week is a great way to keep meals interesting.  Replace up to 30-50% of a meal with RMB’s.  This should maintain total bone content to around 15%.  Remember to reduce the regular meal portion to not exceed total calories – your dog will never tell you the portion was bigger!

Recreational Bones

Think of recreational bones like a tub of ice cream – delicious, but in moderation!  A bone every week or so is great for most dogs. Be aware of the fat content in marrow bones for low-activity dogs and those dealing with pancreatitis. Always monitor your dog while feeding, especially with bones.  And for inexperienced dogs, watch out for aggressive chewing!

Let’s assume we’re feeding a 50lb dog that eats a maintenance diet of 2-3% of their bodyweight in raw food (averaging 180 kcal/100g) per day.  That’s about 1,050 kcal total.  On a given day you could feed them the following:

Treats & Chews: 5-10% Daily Calories

Raw Meaty Bones: 30-50% Daily Calories

Recreational Bones: Intermittent Feeding Only
